Lenten Meditation by Bill Thompson
The Season of Lent leading to the climactic resurrection of Jesus has, since the early church, been an opportunity to meditate on Christ, His perfect example of sacrificial love for sinners. The feelings we have as we contemplate His suffering call us to confession, repentance, and receiving grace. Called meditation on the
"stations" of Christ's work by many denominations, the visual presentation of Jesus' work calls us to pause and think about the way to Calvary. The stations Bill Thompson shows in this exhibit include some but not all of the traditional scenes.
Before the Work of the Cross: 1.. Jesus' Prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane 2... Jesus' Before Pilate 3... The Crown of Thorns 4...Jesus' Carrying of His Cross
The Work on the Cross: 5...The Nails Driven into Christ's Hands 6... The Words of Christ on the Cross
Resurrection Discovery: 7...The Empty Tomb
Take a moment to contemplate the art pieces. Which work especially speaks to you? Does it inspire a particular worshipful idea? What thankful thought comes to mind? Does a line from a praise song or a verse of Scripture seem an appropriate response? This exhibit invites interaction and response by providing Sticky Notes and pencils-briefly write your thought or prayer on the paper and post it on the wall beside (not on...thanks) the framed piece of art. You may sign or initial it or not.
Bill Thompson, a brother living in Norfolk, created this charcoal art for an Easter show at Tabernacle church in 2005. He loved internationals and used to teach them English at the ODU English Language Center. Bill now suffers from a stroke and will not be able to be with us to view this new exhibit, but I think the show would please him as his art is used again to bring glory to His Savior.
